Parliament, Tuesday, 30 April 2024 – The Presiding Officers of Parliament, led by the Acting Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Lechesa Tsenoli, and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Mr. Amos Masondo, express profound sorrow over the passing of Dr. Sam Motsuenyane, a revered stalwart in business and entrepreneurship. Dr. Motsuenyane, who co-founded the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce (NAFCOC) in 1964, was a vanguard in the African business community.
Dr. Motsuenyane was not only a pioneer in black business but also a mentor and supporter of entrepreneurs across South Africa. His journey from humble beginnings to prominence exemplifies his entrepreneurial spirit and indefatigable commitment to economic empowerment. His legacy includes the founding of the African Bank, which was established to meet the financial needs of African citizens under the restrictive apartheid regime.
Defying the stringent apartheid laws that marginalized black entrepreneurs, Dr. Motsuenyane led NAFCOC for 24 years, fiercely advocating for the interests of African businesses. His significant contributions also extended to the political arena, where he played a pivotal role in the negotiations that introduced democracy in South Africa. Following the landmark 1994 elections, he served as a Senator and later as the Leader of the House in the Senate, now known as the National Council of Provinces, where he continued to champion black empowerment.
In recognition of his profound impact on business and community development, former President Nelson Mandela appointed him in 1996 as Ambassador to the five Gulf States—Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Yemen.
"The passing of a titan in ethical business practices and entrepreneurship deeply saddens us," remarked the Presiding Officers. "Dr. Motsuenyane's indelible legacy will continue to inspire and shape the future of entrepreneurship in South Africa."
Dr. Motsuenyane will forever be remembered not only for his significant contributions to our nation’s economy and his role in uplifting the marginalized but also as a personification of courage, conviction, compassion, and tenacity.
Parliament extends its deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Motsuenyane, his business associates, and all South Africans mourning this immense loss.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
